Swivels

Pull in a successful project

As seasoned contractors know, swivels can make or break a horizontal directional drilling project. Seal failure, bearing failure, and shaft breakage are common jobsite disasters from ineffective swivels. None of these problems will be yours if you utilize a Robbins Maximum Duty Pullback Swivel on your next project.

The quality of craftsmanship and the design of a swivel can greatly affect the outcome of a project. Robbins Maximum Duty Pullback Swivels have several patented features.

What is the Robbins Maximum Duty Pullback Swivel?

MDD Machine

With the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) process, there are three main stages, including Piloting (drilling of a pilot hole), Reaming (pilot hole enlargement in stages), and Pullback (installation of the carrier pipe and/or utilities). The swivel is utilized in the last stage. The swivel is attached to the drill rod on one end and either pipe or utilities on the other end. It can be attached with threading or a clevis, depending on a contractor's needs. When the drill rod pulls back through the bore, it is rotating. The swivel keeps the pipe or utility stationary (so that it is not rotating) while being pulled back through the hole. It is vital that the swivel is strong to be able to withstand the high amounts of force placed on it without breaking or losing the utility.

Our swivels are different because of several unique design features.

Features and Benefits:

  • Caterpillar style seals: These highly effective seals keep oil in the bearing cavity, which means you won't have to lubricate the swivel throughout the project.
  • Spherical Roller Thrust Bearings: These bearings allow the swivel to react more efficiently to axial and radial loads.
  • Self-alignment: The bearings also allow for more misalignment in the mechanical elements of the swivel during high stress without compromising the load.
  • Thrust washer: The use of a thrust washer allows a smoother load transition, which creates less stress on the shaft and less breakage.
  • No "set screws": The elimination of set screws means rebuilding is easier.
  • Relief valve: A relief valve eliminates pressure and maintains proper bearing lubrication.
  • Large bearing capacity: We have the largest bearing capacity in the industry, which gives our swivels the longest life.
